“Venezuelans Dominate at T&T’s ‘Best Ever’ International Pro Surfing Event”

Event: CARIB PILSNER INTERNATIONAL SURF FESTIVAL 2011

Sans Souci, Trinidad - The Carib Pilsner International Surf Festival 2011 hosted by the Surfing Association of Trinidad and Tobago (SURFING T&T) this past Indian Arrival Day Long Weekend (May 28th, 29th, 30th 2011) is receiving high praise from the regional surfing community as the ‘Best Ever’ Pro Surfing Event to be held on local shores. Venezuelan surf stars Francisco Bellorin and Rafael Perreira were the events top performers, winning the Open Men’s Pro and the U21 Pro Junior Divisions, respectively.

The Open Men’s Pro was conducted in an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Style Format which is employed at the highest level of international professional surfing and allows for Man on Man competition, which helps to elevate competitors performances. In the Open Men’s Division Francisco Bellorin took home US$3,000 for first place and Runner Up was Jesse Heilman of Florida, USA, who pocketed a cool US$1500. Local favorite Chris Dennis and Venezuelan Rafael Perreira were equal 3rd Place, each winning US$500.

In the U21 Pro Junior Division, Perreira closely ousted 14-year old surf phenomenon Joshua Burke of Barbados in a highflying aerial showdown during the final. Both surfers surfed extremely well throughout the event, with Burke also getting equal 5th in the Open Men’s Division. Georgio Gomez of Florida and Ackeam Phillips of Jamaica placed 3rd and 4th respectively in the Pro Junior Division.

The Caribbean Surf Legends Division was a specialty Invitational Division featuring multiple time national champions, surf pioneers, professionals, and surfboard shapers from Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago. T&T’s Jason Apparicio took top honors in the Final Heat, with Alan Burke (BDS) in Second, Che Lovelace (T&T) in Third, Mark Holder (BDS) in Forth, Billy Wilmot (JAM) in Fifth, and Mikey ‘Bully’ Phillips (T&T) in Sixth. In the Women’s Pro Division Leslie Dickerson (USA) took First place, Cathy Ann Smith (T&T) took Second, and Lexi Lautzker (USA) was Third.

The Festival Vibe of the event rivaled the intense surfing action, creating an all time epic experience for all in attendance. Orange Sky, Joint Pop and supporting acts rocked out the community center in Sans Souci on Saturday Night, setting the stage for a weekend of partying and festivities in the coastal village.

On Sunday the beach was on fire with the hottest bikini babes in T&T, as the Carib Pilsner Bikini Contest took the spotlight and a prize purse of US$1000 was distributed to the top performers. Finally on Monday, Indian Arrival Day, foreigners and locals alike were treated to a genuine cultural experience as the Beacon Insurance Curry Cook-off wet the appetites of the judges and officials. The Carib Pilsner International Surf Festival 2011 sets the stage for many top class action sports events to be sponsored by Carib Pilsner in the coming year.

Competitors and guests from Jamaica, Barbados, Venezuela, USA, and even as far as Australia, have been praising the event, its organizers (SURFING T&T) and its Sponsors, for the cultural vibe, hospitality, organization, and overall impression it demonstrated. Venezuelans to Defend Titles at Carib Pilsner ISF11!

Venezuelan Surf Stars Rafael Pereira and Francisco Bellorin will return to T&T’s shores once again to defend their Titles at the Carib Pilsner International Surf Festival 2011 (ISF11) on Indian Arrival Day Weekend (May 28,29,30).

Last year in the Open Professional Division Pereira walked away with 1st Place and US$3000, while his fellow countryman Bellorin got 2nd Place and US$1,100. In the Professional Juniors Division (U21) the dynamic duo traded places with Bellorin taking 1st Place and US$500, while Pereira took 2nd Place and US$250.

Under the generous patronage of Carib Brewery, the Tourism Development Company and the Ministry of Sport as their primary sponsors, the Surfing Association of Trinidad and Tobago will be hosting the Second Annual Carib Pilsner International Surf Festival 2011 at “Beach Break “in San Souci.

Expectations run high as the word spreads about the only International Surf Event to be scheduled as part of the Western Atlantic Pro Surf Series, the only professional surf tour on East Coast of the United States of America, with a whopping US $10,000 purse for the local event of the tour.

The promoters of the event expect to see a noticeable increase in the numbers of local, regional and international participants in 2011, with the return of top class professional surfers from USA, Brazil, Peru, Uruguay, Argentina and Venezuela in South America, as well as Barbados, Jamaica, St Lucia and others.

Dubbed “Beach Break”, Sans Souci is easily the Mecca of Surfing in Trinidad; this crescent shaped bay provides a high quality of powerful, contestable waves breaking on a rigid sand bar in a coliseum setting. 90 minutes’ drive from Piarco; the organizers have organized shuttles and accommodation for international participants.

This action packed weekend has a stacked daily itinerary both on and offshore, with three different surf categories Junior Pro, Legends and Open Pro classes as well as a specialty “Night Surf“ as the sun sets.

The ever popular Bikini Competition will be taken to another level this year with the largest ever Cash Prize Incentive of US$1,000 total prize purse and a mandatory online participant registration at the event Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=120533528014912). The beautiful ladies of the Bikini Contest will show their stuff along a purpose built 16 ft. RedBull runway elevated over the beach at Sans Souci.

There is also a chance for the best photographers to win $1,000 US for the best Action Shot, Best Moment and the best Scenery Shots. Partygoers get the chance to do their thing at the Legends Beach Concert with Orange Sky, Joint Pop, Skid”Nevely, and Aaron Marquez on Saturday 28th at 5.30pm as the surfing action flows right into live music as the sun sets on the venue.

Chris Dennis wins Surfing T&T’s National Team Trials #1!

On Sunday 13th March, 2011 Surfing T&T held its first qualification event of the year and top local surfers battled for spots on 3 National Teams. Surfing T&T will be selecting surfers to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the International Surfing Association (ISA) Quiksilver World Junior Championships (Peru, May 21-29), the ISA Billabong World Surfing Games (Panama, June 25-July 3), and the ISA World Masters Surfing Championships (El Salvador, Oct 16 -23) for surfers over 35.

Each of these events is contested by the best surfers in the world who compete for National Pride. At Sunday’s trials, held in Beach Break, Sans Souci, top surfers faced challenges from both other competitors’ and the waves themselves that were far from ideal but still offered a very contestable forum for the surfers to perform.

Local standout Christopher Dennis took first place and 1000 points in the Mens Open Division, with Keith Lewis, Che Lovelace and Alan Davis getting 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively. In the Juniors (U18) Division it was Dario Jordan who took first place over Matthew Milne. In the Masters Division, Current National Champion Che Lovelace took First Place, and was followed by Alan Davis, Stuart Hutton and Lee Quesnel in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively.

As Surfing T&T prepares for the first of the ISA Events for 2011, the Quiksilver World Junior Championships to be held in Peru in May, the association will hold one more Team Trials, possibly in Tobago, and begin preparing the National Junior Team to represent the Country abroad. Apparicio Owns D Pressure Pot!

On Saturday 23rd October 2010, the second to last day of the 3 weekend long event waiting period, the elements finally came together for Surfing T&T and Caribbean Waterman to run the Chupara Pressure Pot 2010 specialty surfing event. Chupara point is a peninsular on the north coast of Trinidad that is also known as La Fillette, and is located east of Las Cuevas and west of Blanchisseuse.

The surf spot at Chupara was targeted for this event for its consistent and powerful waves, its dramatic ambiance, and its reputation as the most challenging surf spot found on the North Coast road. Additionally, the organizers partnered with the developer of the private estate located on the peninsular to raise awareness of the existence of the great surf spot and to ensure its protection remains at the forefront of the Eco-Development plans for the area.

The lure of a winner-take-all cash prize in the Open Division managed to bring all of T&T’s top surfers out of the woodwork to compete. The Open Final was a stacked event consisting of current National Champion Che Lovelace, and three (3) past National Champions Jason Apparicio, Chris Dennis, and Keith Lewis. In fact, the 4 surfers in the Final hold a combined total of 15 National Open Men’s Titles and 10+ National Junior Men’s Titles.

At the end of a hard fought 25 minute final heat, it was Jason Apparicio that came out victorious and walked away with $2400 in cash. Chris Dennis got second place and was presented an incredibly stacked hamper from Anthony P Scott. Third place winner Che Lovelace received a Souljahs 4-DVD Boxset and T-Shirts from www.caribbeanwaterman.com .

In the Juniors (U18) division there was a Tobago Invasion with 5 of the 8 young surfers coming from the sister-isle under the watchful eye of the event champion, Jason Apparicio. The Tobago boys surfed really well but they were not able to overcome the consistent surfing of T&T’s current National Junior Champion surfer Dario Jordan. Dario won first place, a Souljahs DVD, and three (3) Quiksilver Trinidad T-Shirts. Second place went to Caelum Blandford, Third was Mathew Milne, and fourth was Steve Aeschlimann.

The first ever event of its kind in Trinidad was a great success and the surfing on display was high caliber. CHUPARA PRESSURE POT 10

On Saturday 9th October 2010 history will be written when for the first time a surf contest will be held at Chupara Point on Trinidad’s North Coast.

...In an effort to highlight the synergy that exists between the natural beauty of this special headland and the performance surfing spectacle that it hosts, this event will feature T&T’s best surfers performing at a new and exciting venue for spectators.

A field of 16 Open Surfers will battle in a single elimination Pro Format for a prize purse of TT$2500. The Top 10 currently ranked Surfing T&T surfers will receive seeding into the event. The organizing committee will list six (6) invitees and two (2) alternates based on nominations from within and the seeded surfers. TT$200 entry.

In the Juniors Category there will be a field of 8 surfers that will be enlisted on a first come, first serve basis. TT$50 entry. There will be hampers and giveaways for junior finalists, as well as specialty prizes for Best Barrel, Best Air, Best Maneuver, and Best Wave. Judging for this event will be facilitated by paid judges of Surfing T&T, who have been certified by the International Surfing Association (ISA). The rules used will be ISA rules. All heats will be 20 minutes long with the exception of the finals that will be 25 minutes each. There will be no beach entries, entries will be closed on Thursday 7th October and Heats will be drawn on Friday 8th October 2010.

Spectators will be welcomed to this very rarely seen location in Trinidad that is normally only frequented by Surfers, Rock Fishermen, and indigenous wildlife. Actually, it is not uncommon to see pairs of Red Macaws that reside in the forests of this area. As much as it is reasonable, the event organizers will be making every effort to make it a comfortable experience for surfing enthusiasts who come to take in the action.

This includes live audio visual / PA system provided by the RedBull Pinzi that will combine great music by DJ Shabba and Surf Commentary by Surfing T&T announcers, limited tents, and Fresh Fish Broth. Spectators are encouraged to come prepared with their coolers, refreshments and anything else they would normally take to a Beach Lime or Rally Track!

“CHE LOVELACE WRITES TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO SURFING HISTORY”

Over this past weekend, July 24th & 25th, the Surfing Association of Trinidad and Tobago (Surfing T&T) held its 2010 edition of the National Surfing Championships to determine National Champions in several divisions. In order to maximize the quality of the surfing conditions for its competitors, the event committee made a decision to hold the event at Roughside Beach, Balandra, making it the first time a National Championship Competition has been held at this location.

This decision proved to be a great call as Mother Nature provided very good quality surf and sunny weather at Balandra, a perfect stage for this country’s best surfers to battle for glory. Over two (2) days of high quality surfing, a total of 30 surfers challenged for 5 division titles: Open Mens, Juniors (U18), Masters (35+), Longboard, and Women.

At the end of an epic weekend of surfing it was clear that every person that witnessed the event, surfer and spectator alike, left the beach with one thing burned into their mind: “Che Lovelace Dominated!” He surfed in more heats than anyone and competed in 3 Divisions (Mens Open, Masters, & Longboard). He also had to surf through the Repocharge Round of the Mens Open in order to qualify to surf in the Final.

Over 2 days Che surfed in 12 heats, where his closest rival, Chris Dennis only surfed 6 heats. Most surfers would consider this a disadvantage for Che, arguing that he would peak early and be fatigued before the main event finals. To the contrary, by the time the Mens Open Final came about Che had the Waves and Conditions completely dialed in. He looked so comfortable in the surf that he made his fellow finalists, all of whom were from Balandra, look totally lost in their own home surf break.

Che’s performance was a culmination of years of dedication to the sport of surfing, both in its free form and competition, including a long hiatus from competition that has seen him return to competitive surfing with a new found focus and drive. Now in his early 40’s, not only is Che literally schooling the “Young Guns” of T&T Surfing, but he also continues to etch his name in Trinidad and Tobago Surfing History.

By winning the 2010 Open Mens category, Che now has six (6) Open Mens Nationals Titles. He has won 3 Juniors (U18) National Titles, one of which was at the same event as an Open Mens Title. He has now come full circle; having this year won an Open Mens National Title and a Masters (35+) National Title in the same event. The icing on the cake for Che this year was winning the Longboard National Title, making him the first surfer to ever secure National Titles in 3 Divisions at a local National Championships.

Over the years, members of the surfing fraternity in Trinidad and Tobago have consistently made the comparison of Che Lovelace to the International Surf Superstar and 9-Time world champion Kelly Slater. Many have affectionately referred to him as ‘Che Slater’ or ‘Trini Slater’. It is an easy comparison to make as they are both from the same era and they share the smooth, polished and very powerful surfing style.

If that’s not enough, Quiksilver Clothing and Al Merrick surfboards, both of which are Kelly Slaters lifetime sponsors, now officially support Che Lovelace Surfing. Finally, both Che Lovelace and Kelly Slater have won more titles than any other surfer in their realm of competition, setting numerous records along the way.

After the Surfing T&T International Surf Festival 2010, Surfing in Trinidad and Tobago will never be the same. This is not just because it was the largest prize purse (US$10,000) ever offered locally, or because it was the first time that the Beach Byte Electronic Score Tabulation system and professional ASP World Tour judges were employed, or even that it was the largest and most dynamic field of competitors ever to compete in an event in Trinidad and Tobago. Surfing in Trinidad and Tobago will never be the same because everyone present in Sans Souci this weekend, surfers and spectators alike, witnessed the most radical, high performance, aerial surfing ever to take place on our waves.

Due to the fact that the waves at “Beach Break” did not live up to its potential by providing larger and more powerful surf, many of the traditional powerhouse surfers were left looking a little slow and powerless. However, the waves on hand were very contestable nonetheless, and looked a lot like an average day of surf in South Florida or Venezuela. This played to the benefit of the visiting surfers who took advantage of the conditions and looked right at home, comfortably executing maneuvers at a level on par with the worlds best surfers.

From the first horn of the event, it quickly became obvious that the bar had been raised for performance and that traditional maneuvers like ‘cut-backs’ and ‘off the lips’ would not suffice, especially in these conditions, to win heats. Aerial surfing, or surfing above the lip, was the order of the day and surfers like Elohe Ali Alvarez (BRA), Jeremy Johnston (USA), and Rafael Pereira (VEN) had no problem serving it up!

The build up to this event saw a lot of media attention focused on the American and Caribbean surfers that had confirmed their attendance. Very little attention, if any, was given to the two young Venezuelan dark horses that subsequently stole the show. Rafael Pereira and Francisco Bellorin took 1st place (USD$3000) and 2nd place (USD$1100) respectively in the Open Mens Division. The two countrymen went on to trade places in the Pro Jr. (U21), with Bellorin taking 1st place (USD$500) and Pereira taking 2nd Place (USD$250). To top it all off, Pereira also took home an additional USD$250 for best wave in the Expression Session.

In the Mens Open, Jesse Heilman (USA) got 3rd place (USD$800) and Jean Carlo Schaffer finished 4th (USD$500). In the Pro Jr. (U21) Georgio Gomez (USA) finished 3rd and Jordan Heaselgrave (BAR) finished 4th. In the Womens Open, Chelsea Tuach (BAR) finished 1st and Sarah Cox (BAH) finished 2nd. Finally, the best manouver of the Expression Session was awarded to Jensen Callaway for a ‘Pop-Shovit’ aerial.

In addition to the incredible surfing performances on show, the spectators had lots more to look at, with a live performance by the Orange Sky and a top class Bikini Contest by Carolina Swimwear. It was an all round perfect weekend in rural Toco with sun, surf and sand, and a great family atmosphere. All the visiting surfers have already begun making plans to return to beautiful Trinidad.

This event was the second event of five events on the Western Atlantic Pro Surf Series (www.westernatlanticsurf.com) and the first event of three on the Caribbean Surf Network Tour (www.csnsurf.com). Be sure to follow the action as the regional pro surfing circuits continue.

Regional Champions for Surfing T&T International Surf Festival 2010!

This weekend (May 1^st & 2^nd), Trinidad and Tobago will host the greatest pool of surfing talent to ever grace our shores. In its inaugural year, the Surfing T&T International Surf Festival has attracted serious attention from professional surfers of this region, securing entries from a long list of champions that will battle for the unprecedented US$3000 individual first prize, and share a total prize purse of US$10,000.

From the Unites States, eight (8) surfers have confirmed entry including Aaron “Gorkin” Cormican, multiple east coast (US) event champion and ESPN X-Games gold medalist in 2003 (MVP) and 2004. Cormican is know in the surfing world for the “Gorkin Flip”, a backside double grab inverted 360 air, the first legit flip ever landed in surfing which he also completed in competition. Joining Cormican will be fellow Americans Evan Geiselman, a Redbull Team Rider and winner of both the Pro Jr. and Open Mens divisions of the Landshark Pro (event #1 of the Western Atlantic Pro Surf Series), Nils Schwiezer, Overall winner of the Western Atlantic Pro Surf Series 2009, and Jeremy Johnston, a Billabong team rider and past USA National Junior representative for ISA World Junior Surfing Games.

Hailing from Barbados is last years Caribbean Surf Network (CSN) overall tour Champion, and CSN Sans Souci Pro 2009 Champion, Lewis St.John. Young Lewis will be looking to stamp his authority on this event for a solid start in the Caribbean Surf Network for 2010. Christopher Clarke, Jonathan Reece, and Junior Female Phenomenon, Chelsea Tuach, who is also Barbados National women’s Champion and CSN tour 2009 women’s Champion, join him to represent the Blue and Yellow of Barbados.

The Jamaican Surfing Association has once again stepped up their support for regional surfing competition and will be coming to Sans Souci, Toco with their A-game. With a total of eight (8) competing surfers, they will be lead by Icah Wilmot, Current and 5-time Jamaican National Surfing Champion and CSN Tour 2009 Open Men’s Runner-Up. Also carded will be Akeam Phillips and Enson Lightbourn, CSN Tour 2009 2^nd and 3^rd ranked Pro Junior Surfers, among others.

Josie Graves, winner of the Barbados Reef Classic 2007, will be representing Puerto Rico at the event and will be one surfer to keep an eye on with his consistent and powerful approach to surfing. Also competing will be four (4) Venezuelan and one (1) Australian competitor, who will add a lot of diversity to the field. Finally, there will be a solid roster of Trinidad and Tobago locals looking to defend their home turf and keep the prize money in the island.

Local pro Christopher Dennis of Balandra, the 2-time Surfing T&T National Champion who is currently competing internationally in ASP events, will be leading the pack. Jason Apparicio and Che Lovelace, both 5-time Surfing T&T National Champions and Jr. Champions, will also be flying the Red, Black and White flag for T&T. Current Surfing T&T National Champion and Executive President Keith Lewis, will also be representing T&T alongside top local surfboard shaper, Alan Davis, who was Surfing T&T’s Surfer of the Year 2007 and CSN Tour overall champion in 2007.

US$10,000 Purse for Surfing T&T International Surf Festival 2010 – Largest ever in Trinidad and Tobago!

The Western Atlantic Pro Surf Series (WAPSS, www.westernatlanticsurf.com), the only pro surfing tour that exists on the east coast of the United States, is run by Michael Bloom who is an Association of Surfing (ASP) certified judge and a professional photographer. For the first time in the tour’s existence it will venture beyond its native shores of the US and run an event in Trinidad and Tobago in partnership with Surfing T&T. In order to make the event attractive to international pro surfers, Bloom teamed up with Épicé Sunscreen of the US to secure the largest Prize Purse ever for an International Surf Contest in Trinidad and Tobago.

Épicé Sunscreen’s (www.epicemd.com) developer and owner, Michael S. Spicer MD, FAAD, was born in Trinidad and is returning to his roots to bring much needed support to a developing sport in a developing island. He is also bringing a superior sun protection product than what is currently available in Trinidad’s market. After testing many sun protection products, Dr. Spicer finally found one that dries like a powder, doesn't burn the eyes and, most importantly, keeps the sun's harmful rays at bay. After all, no one wants to hold a surfboard or a fishing rod with sticky or slippery hands just because of sun protection.

The stage is now set for an epic surf contest in Sans Souci, Toco; at a beach the locals affectionately call “Beach Break”. The small, half moon shaped bay will provide a coliseum style ambiance for spectators to watch the best pro surfers from the region battle for an unprecedented prize purse and the open men’s winner will walk away with US$3,000! With so much money on the line, Surfing T&T and WAPSS have employed the services of top International Surf Judges from Jamaica, Barbados, Puerto Rico, and the Unites States, to compliment the a solid team of local judges who will all be managed by Surfing T&T’s head judge John Torry.

Two of these judges are certified by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) and the rest are certified by the International Surfing Association (ISA). Additionally, for the first time ever in Trinidad and Tobago, the Beach Byte computerized score tabulating system will be used to provide real-time tabulation of judge’s scores and place positions of surfers in the heat. This computer system allows for greater spectator engagement as everyone is aware of what the surfers in the water need to accomplish in order to win their heat and advance to the next round.

The main categories are Open Men’s, Open Woman’s, and Pro Junior (Under 21). There will also be a Night Surfing Expression Session Event, where top surfers will be surfing under stadium lighting and will be looking to perform radical maneuvers to win a separate cash prize.

In addition to being internationally recognized as the second event of the 2010 Western Atlantic Pro Surf Series, Surfers will also be awarded points based on their performances that will contribute to their overall standing in the Caribbean Waterman Challenge 2010 competition (www.caribbeanwaterman.com).

International competitors will benefit from subsidized accommodation and meals packages organized by Surfing T&T, and can choose one of two packages at USD$30/day and USD$50/day, all meals and accommodation included. Surfing T&T set to host regions best surfers!

Surfing T&T (www.surfingtt.org) has teamed up with the Caribbean Surf Network (www.csnsurf.com) and the Western Atlantic Professional Surf Series (www.westernatlanticsurf.com) to bring a world class International Surfing Event to the shores of Trinidad and Tobago in 2010. In just about 5 weeks time, professional surfers from the region, including representatives from Jamaica, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and the Unites States, will be competing in the SURFING T&T INTERNATIONAL SURF FESTIVAL 2010 in Sans Souci, Toco, Trinidad.

The main categories are Open Men’s, Open Woman’s, and Pro Junior (Under 21). There will also be a Night Surfing Team Event, which will feature impromptu teams of fellow countrymen, sponsored team riders, crewmembers, and locals. This will be an “aloha cup” style event, different from the tradition style competitions with which spectators and surfers are accustomed. On May 1^st and 2^nd, 2010 The Surfing Association of Trinidad and Tobago (SURFING T&T) will be hosting its first international surfing event in over a decade. In recent years the beaches of the Toco area, located on the northeastern tip of Trinidad, have played host to a handful of International Surf Contests organized by various sponsors and organizations. However, none of these have managed to live up to the reputation of the legendary International Surf Events hosted in the early 1990’s by SURFING T&T and historically remembered as the ZOOM BREAK INTERNATIONAL.

SURFING T&T has spent the last 5 years getting their domestic affairs in order by certifying Coaches and Judges through the International Surfing Association (ISA, www.isasurf.org), implementing surfing development programs, and sending National Teams to ISA World Surfing Games events. The Association is now in a formidable position to re-introduce the excitement of International Surfing Competition to the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, and the greater region.

The SURFING T&T INTERNATIONAL SURF FESTIVAL 2010 will be different from any International Surf Event held in Trinidad and Tobago in the Past. The competition will be a combination of a Professional Event, which means Open Surfers will compete for Money Prizes, and National Team Event, which means National Teams will compete for National Pride and Silverware. In addition, the competition will be internationally recognized as the second event of 2010 on the recently developed Western Atlantic Surf Series (www.westernatlanticsurf.com), an US based regional professional surf series. Surfers will also be awarded points based on their performances that will contribute to their overall standing in the Caribbean Waterman Challenge 2010 competition (www.caribbeanwaterman.com).

Moreover, this event will be a weekend long FESTIVAL, in every sense of the word. There will be something for everyone as we promote the celebration of the beach culture of Trinidad and Tobago and expose it to international guests. There will be live music, a bikini competition, action sports demonstrations, local cuisines and delicacies, a spacious and comfortable beach environment for relaxing and socializing in the sun, and of course world-class surfing action!

SURFING T&T has invited competitors from Venezuela, Barbados, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the Unites States. SURFING T&T SICK SATURDAY A HUGE SUCCESS!

SANS SOUCI, TRINIDAD. On Saturday 9^th January 2010 the SURFINGT&T held their first official event of the year in Toco. The day began at noon with the Surfer of the Year National Team Trails #1 at Salibea Beach, near the Toco Lighthouse. With solid waves in the 4’-5’ range and favorable conditions for contest surfing, the 12 top surfers in the country entered the water to compete for valuable points and hopefully a place on the National Team.

Top local surfer, and 2009 Surfer of the Year, Christopher Dennis Managed to edge past local surfing legend Che Lovelace in the Final to take an early lead in the 2010 Surfer of the Year race. His victory will secure him 1000 points on the tally sheet.

Minutes after the horn was blown to end the Trials, all the competitors and event organizers packed up and headed for Sans Souci, where the SURFING T&T Annual General Meeting was held. The existing executive of the Association was un-contested and they secured their positions for another two (2) year term running the development of Surfing in T&T. The executive committee is: Keith Lewis – President, Sherrard Spiers – Vice President, Warren Rostant – Secretary, Lee Quesnel – Treasurer, Mark de Verteuil – Public Relations, and Johnathan Torry – Head Judge.

The 2009 SURFING T&T Surfer of the Year, Christopher Dennis, was then awarded with his very special SANS SOUCI MEMORIAL TROPHY that was build locally and dedicated to the lives of all the Trinidad and Tobago surfers that have been lost over the years. Finally, the members of SURFING T&T were treated to an experience of a lifetime. With the help of Power Up Rental Equipment Ltd, the Bay of SANS SOUCI was illuminated with two massive industrial lighting towers and the surfers all paddled out at 8pm to surf the waves in the night, under the lights.

This was a first for everyone present and the energy and good vibe was overwhelming. The night surfing under lights was an experiment by the Association in preparation for an actual contest under lights, featuring International Teams, as part of the SURFING T&T INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2010, scheduled for May 1^st and 2^nd, 2010.

MT.IRVINE, TOBAGO – From December 29th 2009 – January 1st 2010, Caribbean Waterman (caribbeanwaterman.com) and the local surfing community in Tobago successfully ran a surfing event in Tobago that highlighted the quality of the surfers and their performances in the high quality waves of the Sister Island, with support from SURFINGT&T (surfingtt.org).

This spectacular event, which coincided with huge waves (2.5 – 3.5 Meters)formed by a North Atlantic Low Pressure System, was blessed with surfing conditions that dreams are made of, at least for the surfers. Many of Tobago’s beaches were too rough for swimming and this encouraged many spectators to gather on Mt.Irvine Beach to witness the first Surf Contest in Tobago in over 20 years.

The goal of this event was to have minimal negative impact on the surf break at Mt.Irvine and the great beach culture that already exists. Instead, the organizers wanted the event to have a great positive impact on the performance quality of surfing in Tobago. Surfers and watermen who would not normally compete in traditional surf contests were encouraged to take part in this event due to its new and innovative format.

Traditionally surf contest are purely judged by non-competing judges, in a rigid schedule of 20 minute heats, whereas a large portion of the CW COCRICO PRO TOBAGO was judged based on the observations and opinions of the competing surfers themselves through a voting process. This meant that credit was given where credit was due, and the athletes that were awarded prizes knew that they had truly gained the respect of their peers.

Additionally, a large focus of this event is was the youth factor. SURFINGT&T has made it clear that our country needs a lot of attention focused on youth development. Tobago has shown potential in this area far beyond its size and population, and they did not disappoint at the event with 4 of the top 5 U18 surfers coming from Tobago.

The positive feedback from the Tobago Community in the wake of this event has been overwhelming and many have volunteered their support for growing the event into an annual gathering with significant additional resources and infrastructure. Tobago surfing legend and winner of Best Big-wave Surfing Exhibit and Best Overall Waterman Performance, Barry St.George had this to say:

“This event has come as a true blessing to surfing in Tobago and has brought recognition where it is long overdue. All critics who downplayed the potential of this event are humbled by its great success!”

The Surfing Association of Trinidad and Tobago(SATT) and the Caribbean Kids and Families Therapy Organisation(CKFTO), both non-profit organizations, provided a Surf Experience for Special Needs Kids and their siblings on the 5th of September at Las Cuevas Beach. The aim of this therapeutic experience is to empower the special needs children in a safe, fun and challenging activity while nurturing their relationship with their siblings and parents.

CKFTO’s mission is to provide professional and empathetic therapeutic services to all Caribbean children ages birth to twenty-one with special needs; to provide support and empowerment to families of children with special needs and to educate and involve the community ofTrinidad and Tobago in creating an open and caring society for all persons with special needs.

The Surfing Association is proud to have been involved in this experience and all of our certified instructors and several surfing and non-surfing members assisted in making this a truly 'special' day for all concerned.

We feel proud to be a part of something that is greater than the association, it's intitiatives, and the sum of it's parts. This event will surely become annual event, and perhaps a more frequent event. Everyone who made it possible, sponsors, volunteers, family, friends, and surfers alike do not need a pat on the back because they can be comforted by the overwhelming joy expressed on the faces of every child present on this special day.

GOOD EFFORT BY WEST INDIAN SURFERS...

The last two days of the ISA World Surfing Games saw some good action from the Caribbean contingent; however a bout of bad luck meant that none of the island boys made it to the fourth day of competition. On Sunday, Stephan Corbin (BAR) opened the day by winning his heat with a combined 2 wave score of 10.40. Soon after Johnathan Reece (BAR), Christopher Clarke (BAR), and Shane Simmonds (JAM) got second place in their heats, advancing into the Repercharge Round 2. Che Lovelace (TNT) finished a close 3^rd in his heat due to a very questionable call on the judge’s part.

On Monday, these Four Open Surfers contested in their Repercharge heats in slightly small, tougher conditions. Although none of these surfers advance, they all surfed quite well and young Shane Simmonds from Jamaica put up a valiant effort, surfing very fluid and powerfully on the small waves. He was dropped in on during his heat; however the interference call did not help his cause in passing through to the next round.

Still in the event are our Caribbean brothers from Puerto Rico, and our neighbors Venezuela, along with many other National Teams fighting for valuable team points! TOUGH FIRST DAY @ BILLABONG WORLD SURFING GAMES 2009

The Caribbean Watermen who are representing the West Indian nations of Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago came up against intense competition on the first day of the World Surfing Games 2009. In the Open Men’s Division it was Che Lovelace who broke the ice, facing off with local Costa Rican hero Gilbert Brown. Brown was on fire and destroyed every wave that came his way to the delight of a large crowd of supporters present on the beach. In the end he had the 4 highest scores of the heat, and Lovelace was unable to get two solid scores to progress in the main event. Lovelace will surf again in the Repo charge Round 1 tomorrow.

Shane Simmonds of Jamaica, Simon Coles and Stephan Corbin of Barbados, and Keith Lewis of Trinidad were among the West Indian surfers who were able to beat opponents in their heat and get a third place finish. However, none of the surfers from these three countries were able to progress in the main round. They will all battle in the Repo Charge Round 1 tomorrow in a bid to advance further in the competition. Today’s highlights were WCT surfers like Jeremy Flores of France (pictured) absolutely destroying the waves, and the sell-out crowd in the thousands that came out to support the local hero’s.

The Costa Rican team did not disappoint, having all four of their open male surfers advance to the next round, either in first or second place in their heat. Look out for more great surfing action tomorrow on www.billabongpro.com !

SATT Blessed with Epic Nationals for 2009!

The SATT National Surfing Championships 2009 took place over the weekend and with the dedicated support of RedBull Energy Drink it turned out to be a very successful event! King Neptune really provided increadible surf once again this year, with suprisingly "going-off" conditions all morning on the second day. When the chartes were calling for a reduction in size, the surf actually got slightly bigger, cleaner and more lined up.

Champions were crowned in the U14, U18, Mens, Masters, and Grand Masters categories, with tight competition among the athletes in each category. In the U18 it was Oneal Coa reclaiming his title from 2007, that he lost last year to Dario Jordan. In the U14 it was Local Boy Jamie Phillips that took top honors.

In the Grand Masters (45+) it was Andrew "Quincy" Cabral that put 4 of his old time rivals under pressure and came out victorious, whereas in the Masters Division (35-45yrs) Che Lovelace managed to defend his title from last year. Finally, in the Open Mens division, it was SATT President Keith Lewis that fought through the Repo-Charge rounds of the event and created an unexpected upset in the final heat of the day, taking the National Championship from Chris Dennis who was a close second.

There was a great turnout at the beach and the weather really cooperated all weekend. Beach goers and surfing supports enjoyed great music and visual stimulation provided by the RedBull Pinzi Vehicle, as many of them cooked up and limed while enjoying the highest quality local surfing action.

The current National Team and Local Head Judge John Torrey will be travelling to Costa Rica next month (aug 1-9th), along with teams from Jamaica and Barbados, to represesnt the Caribbean at the ISA World Surfing Games 2009. After review by the ISA Technical and Executive Committees, the ISA has informed the SATT that our Head Judge John Torry has been selected as a member of the judging panel for the 2009 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games to be held in Playa Hermosa, Jaco, Costa Rica from August 1^st – August 8^th, 2009.

Chris Dennis Wins Again!

This sunday Trinidad and Tobago's National Surfing Champion 2008, Christopher Dennis, continued his winning form by securing his second victory in a row at SATT National Team Trails #3, held at Beach Break, Sans Souci.

Replicating the form of on-fire ASP surfer Joel Parkinson, who also won his last two events back-to-back, Chris has all but fully secured a birth on his country's National Team for the second year in a row and is likely to be representing the Red, Black and White come July 31st in Hermosa, Costa Rica at the World Surfing Games 2009!

Conditions at Beach Break, Sans Souci once again turned on for the field of competition, proving why it's considered the most consistent surf spot in the twin island state. Both Juniors and Open surfers had an opportunity to compete in their divisions. The results were as follows:

Salinas, Ecuador, April 1st, 2009) The International Surfing Association announced yesterday, the forty recipients of the 2009 ISA Individual Scholarship Program during an ISA Development Meeting held at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Ecuador.

This is the third consecutive year that the ISA holds the Scholarship Program. The program started in 2007 with only five grants awarded and within one year expanded it to 20 scholarships. For 2009, the ISA increased the program by 100%, issuing 40 scholarships to Under 18 junior surfers from 22 countries. The ISA received over 80 applications from 24 countries for this year’s program.

Before announcing the winners, ISA President Fernando Aguerre said: “I believe the Scholarship is a huge step forward by the ISA in areas of the world where we can never do enough. Together, we are supporting the dreams and hopes of good students who are also good surfers. We went from five to 40 scholarships in three years and we´re hoping to reach 100 in a couple of years.”

After careful review by the Scholarship Selection Committee, the ISA announced the following surfers as ISA Surfing Ambassadors in every corner of the world. The recipients are inspirational human beings, great surfers and students who want to succeed in surfing and school.

The ISA is able to provide scholarships due to the generous support from Quiksilver Foundation, Billabong, Reef Redemption, and Global Surf Industries, Inc.

Chris Dennis wins SATT National Team Trials Number 2!

The climax of this event took place in the semi-final when we witnessed an awesome showdown between past National Champ and winner of Trials number one Che Lovelace, and Current National Champ Chris Dennis.

After being eliminated in the same stage of the first trials earlier this year, by Che, Chis was not about to let a reoccurence take place. The two surfers rode set waves back to back with explosive action and kept raising the bar. So much so, that the final was almost an anti-climax!

In the end, it was Chris who took top honors and is poised to secure his place on the National Team once again. Che too, is in a good position to secure his position on the team.

Che Lovelace Wins Open and Masters!

When Che Lovelace heard that the World Surfing Games were to be held in Warm, Sunny Costa Rica this year, 2009, he made clear his intentions that he was going to be part of the SATT National Team. You see, Che was the standout surfer on the SATT Masters National Surf Team that competed at the World Masters in Peru last year.

Needless to say, the water was frigid and the wetsuits were restricting. Compounding that, it had been several years since Che had competed in a heat, much less an event of that magnitude. But old habits die hard, and Che has a good habit of schooling the school when it comes to competitive surfing. Affectionately know among the groms as Che "Slater", the old guy lived up to is reputation this sunday and held a class on how to deconstruct your competition, both young an old.

This is not the first time Che has won multiple divisions of an SATT event, having won both Juniors and Open at Nationals many years back, and you can rest assured it won't be the last so long as he continues to compete at the national level. All in all, the first event for the year for the SATT was a great success and the waves were amazing in Sans Souci for the entire day. Oh Yeah, and Che is now well on his way to cementing his spot on the National Team for the WSG 2009 in the Warm, Sick surf of Hermosa Beach, Costa Rica!

SATT KICKS OFF 2009 WITH FIRST TEAM TRIALS!

Happy New Year to all.....the SATT had a very busy 2008 and will be kicking off 2009 with Surfer of the Year/National Team Trials- Event 1 on Sunday January 25th. Open Men, Women, Bodyboard, Longboard and Masters categories will be contested on the day. The event is open to all members who have paid their membership fees for 2009. If you have not already done so, payment can be made on the day. The event will begin at 9am sharp. Registration will open at 8am and close off at 9am so be punctual. Members can register after 9am, but would not be allowed to compete on the day. The location for the first event will be announced at a later date.

The 2008 World Surfing Games was a great learning experience and this year we would like to improve our ranking. The only way to do so is to have a better prepared team, physically and mentally. The first 4 events on the SATT 09 calender will be used to select the surfers for the National Team Training Program. The final team will be selected from these surfers based on their overall performance, committment and attitude during the Training Program.

The 2009 AGM is scheduled for Tuesday 17th of February at a time and place to be announced. Please mark this day on your calendar and do your best to attend. We need your support and input to help develop and improve our sport in T&T.

ISA WSG OFFICIAL RESULTS...

Trinidad and Tobago officially placed 25th at the World Games, beating Jamaica, Sweden, Ecuador and Guatemala.

Accomplishments of note were Chris Dennis ranking 41st in the World Individual Ranking, and Alan Davis 81st. Chris was the best ranked of any Caricom based surfers.

Although the SATT team had a very positive showing at this event, we have identified several key areas for improvement and will be working on these in the coming months to prepare for the ISA WSG 2009 in "warm" Costa Rica.

Look out for Team Trials beginning in January, each month for 4 months. We will have a complete team picked by the and of April 2009.

TnT MASTERS

The journey to the World Masters Championships 2009 kicked off on Sunday 7th October in Toco with the first of five trials. Conditions were classic at Salibea, with waves 3-5ft and the occasional head high set. The slight offshores provided beautifully shaped waves and attracted over 20 spectators in the water, who not only had a front row view, but enjoyed the scraps that were on offer.

After the spray cleared and scores were tabulated, Andrew 'Quincy' Cabral won the over 45 division and Che Lovelace claimed top spot in the 35-45 category. Thanks to all the surfers who cleared the lineup and respected the SATT's decision to hold the trials at Salibea. We look forward to more participants at the upcoming events.

There has been a change to the National Team heading to the World Surfing Games in Portugal come October. Justin Tang will be heading off to university in Canada later this month and has decided to relinquish his position on the team as he feels he would not be prepared for the event. Therefore the next highest ranked surfer, Chris Dennis will be taking his place.

Justin earned his spot on the National Team with solid, consistent surfing throughout the year and will be missed. His replacement, Chris is one of our most experienced contest surfers and his current form, having just won the National Championships in July, makes him a welcome addition to the team.

The SATT's most covetted title will be challenged and we will be crowning National Surfing Champions in various divisions.

All surfers must be paid in full for SATT membership in order to compete. Registration ends Friday 11th July, the day before the event. There will be NO BEACH ENTRIES!

El Presidente Wins his First National Team Trials!

The Third and final National Team Trials for the World Surfing Games 2008 took place in good contest conditions at Beach Break, Sans Souci, this past Saturday. After this event, the final opportunity to compile qualification points for the National Team will be at the SURFING TNT NATIONAL SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008, taking place July 12 &13th, 2008.

At this weekends event, SATT President Keith Lewis won a local contest for the first time since winning the Junior National Crown back in 1996, at this very location. He narrowly outscored local surfer/shaper ALAN DAVIS by 0.2 points to take the victory. JASON APPARICIO secured 3rd place, partly due to poor wave selection in less than epic surf during the final. SHANE HENNAMAN made yet another final, showing great consistency, and was rewarded with a 4th place for his efforts.

Jason Apparicio was very solid through the event, but could not find the waves in the final to seal the deal.

Alan Davis throwing buckets on his backside, was defeated by a mere 0.2 points in the final.

Keith Lewis, SATT President, posted his first local contest victory since a Junior Title in 1996.

Trials #3 Postponed to Next Saturday, 10th May @ 8am!

Due to unsurfable conditions on the coast, Trials #3 has been prosponed to next Saturday, May 10th @8am. We will be starting extra early and surfers who are not on time will miss their heat and be eliminated.

We have a forcast of solid surf for saturday so it should turn out to be a great event. This event will be Mobile in the Toco Area, Taking advantage of the best possible surf conditions.

TRIALS #2 IN DAMIENS A SUCCESS !

Following the "Man" of his era (Slater), JASON APPARICIO goes 2 for 2 after the second event of the year, putting him well ahead in the SURFING TNT ranks for 2008!

Fresh off a trip from Indo, it appeared as though the "Barrel of his Life" in G-Land helped the old veteran find/continue his winning form.

Serious rain on sunday morning threated to shut down the event, held for the first time in Damiens on the North Coast, but all the hard cores made the effort to come out and the event turned out to be a great success.

We were blessed with very good contest waves in the 3-5' range that were quite powerful and tricky at times. The event also had the best surfer turnout thus far for a trials in 2008, totaling 16 competitors.

Justin Tang, a Damiens Bay regular, was able to find a gem of a barrel in his semi-final heat, posting a near perfect, highest score of the day. Fellow "north-coast rat" Alan De Verteuil made his first appearance in a Trials Final, securing 3rd place. Riding a variety of borrowed boards, Shane Hennaman's luck appeared to run out in the finals, he took 4th.

In the end event results were as follows:

Big Respect to the Masters crew that represented SURFING TnT this March at the ISA WORLD MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIP!

Andrew Millar being mentioned for winning his first round heat!

TRIALS #2 & BEACH LIME / BBQ / MUSIC !!

On SUNDAY 13th APRIL, SURFINGTNT will be hosting the SECOND NATIONAL TEAM TRIALS for the WORLD SURFING GAMES in PORTUGAL this OCTOBER.

We are encouraging surfers and beach lovers alike to join us at DAMIENS BAY, BLASHISSEURS. Surfing will begin at 10am sharp. There will be music, and open BBQ pits provided. So bring your food, your drinks and your friends for live surfing action.

Please monitor this website for updates as should we not get the contestable waves desired for the set date, we will have to relocate the venue of Trials #2 to another location in the Toco area.

Las Cuevas Beach Cleanup a Success!

MYSTIC HEMP and SURFING TNT teamed up for a beach cleanup at Las Cuevas. Although the turnout was a little lacking, the effort by the attendees really made up for it. We were able to fill up the tray of my Hilux 4 times with the amount of rubish removed from the beach.

Amoung those in attendance were SURFING TNT head judge JOHN TORREY and his kids. Seen here in the photo are Keith Lewis (SURING TNT president) and TROY HADEED (MYSTIC HEMP founder and owner).

As an added bonus, as if rewarding us for our effort, the BOWL at the end of the beach turned on all day and provided excellent relief in the form of head high, clean, grinding lefts and rights! An awesome day all round.

We hope that ALL members of SURFING TNT will make the effort to attend and participate in our next beach cleaning venture!

For those who made the effort to be there, we were suprised and moved by an unexpected speech from ALAN that was very genuine and included him thanking all the surfers in Trinidad for keeping him motivated and being the reason he keeps doing what he's doing...

LEWIS ST.JOHN WINS CSN SAN SOUCI PRO!

This weekend the 2nd Annual CSN SANS SOUCI PRO was held in very good surf conditions at Beach Break, Sans Souci. There was an excellent turnout with competitors from T&T, Barbados, Jamaica and Martinique all competing for the prize money at stake.

Lewis St.John surfed very well to oust last years champion Chris Dennis and take first prize. Dennis got second place. Lewis also won the Juniors division. The final results were as follows:

National Team Trials kicked off on Saturday 16th February in challengin conditions at Beach Break, San Souci. Sixteen competitors took part and in the end it was Jason Apparicio that came out on top.
